Magazine Research

Rolling Stone is an American monthly magazine that focuses on popular culture. It was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner. the magazine is best know for its music coverage and political reporting. in recent years the magazine has changed its approach by introducing articles on actors and has taken a focus on TV, films and popular music to appeal to a younger audience.

in this cover we get the story of Bob Marley, possibly the most famous reggae singer of all time. Straight away we get a close up, black and white shot of Marley smoking Marijuana. The use of the close up has a huge effect as we get to dive deeper into this characters true story. also the fact that the cover has such small text on the page with only having the title 'Rolling Stone' and the small subtitles on the covers right side, suggest that the main image is the attraction to the audience. This is evident as the main images has Marley staring down the camera straight to the audience, the use of rule of thirds here is effective as its defiantly pulling the reader in. The position of the joint is also important as Bob Marley was a massive supporter of the campaign to make it league in Jamaica and the rest of the world. In the image he can be represented as a releazxed character who's not to bothered by whats happening, or this could just be because he's high. but thats not the point as he is emitting a very bland facial expression. but the emotion isn't seen on his face its see through his eyes, through out the whole cover i would say that Marley eyes are whats draws the audience in. This was clever by the magazine producers as this will attracted readers to read the magazine as they want to discover the true story of bob Marley.

in this double page spread the importance is drawn to the artist as he is seen smoking on the left page.  Wiz Khalifa is a young talented rapper that has taken the word by storm. Khalifa is seen as a very important figure as he as taken up the whole first page. On the second page we get to see the the artists logo 'WK' this symbol can connote the artists presents and influence as it takes about half the size of the page. Under the emblem we get a subtitle saying 'how high', this can link to the bob marly cover as both artists are very much into smoking marijuana, and are trying to still fight the battle for legalisation. the article effects the audience in a massive way as its addressing a huge topic as such a big artist has a large following and influences millions of people around the world. its also a big risk for the industry as its taking a risk to possibly promote the use of the drug through some audiences interpretation of the interview. however people might say that such a cove and double page spread is wrong and shouldn't be allowed.
